The narrative begins in May 2019 when Gary made a courageous decision to break free from Google's "Golden Handcuffs." Driven by the belief that a new generation of leaders committed to civic innovation was essential, he co-founded Civics Unplugged (CU). Over three impactful years, Gary contributed his expertise to various facets of CU, from organizational design to fundraising. The initiative gained support from influential figures like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Andrew Yang, and partnerships with entities such as Coinbase, Ethereum Foundation, and the Smithsonian.
Transition to Web3: Dream DAO
Fast forward to January 2022, and Gary, along with Civics Unplugged, took a momentous step into the world of web3 by launching Dream DAO. This initiative aimed to build the web3 x social impact ecosystem, empowering Gen Zers to learn about web3 and harness its potential for positive change. The Dream DAO garnered tremendous support from the web3 community, exceeding all expectations.
Dream DAO: Training Gen Z for a Brighter Future
Powered by Civics Unplugged, Dream DAO embarked on a mission to train Gen Zers in utilizing web3 to contribute to projects that regenerate people and the planet. Through programs like the Explorers Program, Learning Together sessions, and IRL Community Events, Dream DAO provided funding, mentorship, and training to young individuals.
Noteworthy Mentors and Supporters
Dream DAO boasted an impressive network of mentors, including leaders from Gitcoin, Orca Protocol, Forefront, and the Ethereum Foundation. These mentors played a crucial role in guiding youth through the Explorer's Program.
The Future Vision - A Retrospective Perspective
As we look back, Gary's vision for Dream DAO included a solarpunk future where communities worldwide benefit from capable builders using their web3 skills to regenerate communities and the planet. By 2030, Dream DAO aspired to have directly supported thousands of Gen Z builders, inspired millions of Gen Zers to explore the web3 x social impact space, and defined a vision for the larger web3 x social impact ecosystem.
